In September 1989 a small group of musicians with varying instruments and abilities and an 18-year old conductor, Fergus Shiel, met in a classroom in St.Patrick’s School in Greystones and founded the Greystones Orchestra, the aim being simply to enjoy playing together, performing for the community and to encourage musicians of varying levels in the local and wider community. Over 30 years later, this is still our aim and we now boast a multi-cultural orchestra with players from far and wide, all with one common language – music! During that time we have given multiple performances in many locations in north Wicklow and further afield, including a tour to Galway and an appearance in a short film set in Greystones called “The Connivers“.
